Harder gaining momentum with endorsements from
Modesto Bee and California Teachers Association (CTA)

With the Modesto Bee and CTA Endorsements, Harder consolidates more labor union and paper endorsements than any other Democrat in CA-10

(May 15, 2018)—CA-10 Democratic Challenger Josh Harder earned the sole endorsement of The Modesto Bee–the largest printed publication in the district. Furthermore, Harder secured the California Teachers Association (CTA). Representing over 325,000 classroom teachers, librarians, counselors, nurses and social workers in over 1,000 school districts in the state, this is a major stepping stone for Harder who now has 8 Union Endorsements.

“As a former paperboy, and now as a teacher at Modesto Junior College, it is energizing to receive the support of so many different corners of the community,” said Harder. “As a paper that is in tune with the needs of the community, the Modesto Bee’s nod of support means a lot and represents that its time for new representation in Congress of Modesto and the rest of the district.  Those that live in CA-10 understand how critical the teachers are to our local economy and I am honored to receive the teachers’ endorsement.  I look forward to working with our community to build schools and institutions that teach the students of today to become the Central Valley’s members of Congress, farmers and teachers of tomorrow.”

Harder is the first Democrat that the Modesto Bee has endorsed for Congress since 2010. Furthermore, the Bee endorsed Denham in 2010, 2012, and 2014, only breaking with him in 2016 over Denham’s refusal to denounce Trump, yet not going so far as to endorse challenger Michael Eggman. The Bee continued their spurn of Eggman hitting him on lack of experience, backing and candor. Furthermore, the Bee hit other CA-10 challenger Virginia Madueño on her lackluster fundraising numbers and her failed electoral runs like that in the Assembly two years ago.

Modesto Bee wrote, “Harder also is encouraging Medicare for all – which makes a lot of sense since the Republicans gutted the ACA’s foundation and sent health-insurance rates through the roof. He’s also the strongest on sensible gun rules.” Furthermore, after an analysis of each candidate, the Bee finished, “If Democrats want a real choice in November, a candidate who is smart, will grow with the job and has a chance to actually win, they should choose Harder in June.”

CTA, which represents the vast majority of public school teachers in Congressional District 10, has also endorsed Denham in previous elections. However, this cycle they have pledged to do everything in their power to turn out their many thousands of active members and retirees for Harder in his election. Harder was the direct recipient of an outstanding public school education and attended Modesto High School where he enrolled in the prestigious International Baccalaureate program. There are very few other organizational endorsements that brings the large, motivated, respected and active membership like CTA.

“As a teacher at Modesto Junior College, Harder understands the key issues our young people face in education in Central Valley. Harder’s commitment to ensuring Central Valley kids have access to a good education and apprenticeship programs really stood out. At this critical juncture, when our nation’s public schools are under unprecedented attack by Betsy DeVos, we need effective leaders like Josh representing us in Washington, D.C.” stated Christopher Aguilar, elementary school teacher in the Sylvan Union School District in Modesto.

In the past two weeks, Harder was officially endorsed by Iron Workers 118 and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, making Harder’s labor support 4 times that of any other challenger. He has been endorsed by several local organizations and individuals such as the Women Democratic Club of Stanislaus County, Stanislaus State Democratic Club, the Chair of the Stanislaus County Democratic Club, Teamsters Joint Council 7, IBEW 595 and 684, and the Bricklayers, Tilesetters, and Allied Craftworkers Local 3.  Furthermore, Harder has secured the support of several prominent national groups including the New Dems, The Arena, J Street, and Council for a Livable World. Furthermore, in the past three months, Harder’s campaign also announced they contacted over 40,000 voters in the district at least once—a milestone no other candidate in the district can attest to. Harder is set to announce yet another labor endorsement in mid-May.

A product of California’s Central Valley, Josh Harder is running as a Democrat in California’s 10th District–currently represented by Republican Jeff Denham. Denham won re-election in 2016 by the 3rd narrowest margin of any Republican Congressman nationwide. The race has been listed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) as a top target in the 2018 midterms and is one of the 23 districts currently held by a Republican that voted for Hillary.
